After over a month and a half at the Party 10/20 six-max game, I finally decided to give the infamous Party 15/30 games a try. I'd been hesitant to do so for a couple reasons. One, about 99% of my online play since mid-December has been shorthanded, and so my full-ring game was probably a little rusty. And two, would it really be more profitable than the 10/20 games?
Well, gee, it's 50% higher stakes, so sure it should be potentially more profitable, right? Well, playing four tables of 10/20, I see 350+ hands/hour. If I do four tables of 15/30, since it's a full ring game, I'll be seeing more like 250 hands an hour. If I win x big bets per hundred hands at 10/20, I make 3.5*x*20= $70x/hour. If I win those same x big bets per hundred hands at 15/30 then I make 2.5*x*30 = $75x/hour. Well that's slightly more, but that's assuming I can maintain the same win rate at 15/30 as I do at 10/20. Just a slight drop in my win rate and you can see how the move could easily be unprofitable. Add to that the fact that I'll be experiencing the variance of 15/30 rather than 10/20, which means 50%+ bigger swings, and it's easy to see why moving to 15/30 isn't all that enticing.
But I did it anyway. At least to give it a try.
My first session, Saturday night, I played four tables for a little over an hour, and did extremely well. I finished out the night at 10/20, and it wasn't the same--playing 10/20 was much less enjoyable than the 15/30 had been. I think I've overdone the shorthanded tables, and the switch to full tables was a welcomed change. So last night I was once again at 15/30, and this time I stayed there for the entire session. Once again I did very well. Is 14BB/100 sustainable??
I actually got so comfortable at the tables I began playing six tables at once. That changes the above math comparison a bit. I can probably see 360 hands/hour doing six 15/30 tables at once, which is about the same as I see doing four 10/20 tables. If I maintain the same win rate, my hourly rate goes up by 50%. And the simple math shows that as long as my win rate at 15/30 is greater than (2/3)x, where x is my 10/20 win rate, then it will be more profitable for me to be at 15/30. That, I think is doable.
So now I have a clear goal. (2/3)x. The bottom line is that I'll be around the 15/30 tables a lot more, although I'm sure I'll still be playing some 10/20 to keep my shorthanded game up to speed. Wish me luck. Online 30/60 might only be a few short months away...
(As might be going back down to 1/2. Eek.)
